What is dimpleplasty?

Advances in modern medicine have made cosmetic procedures more common. A dimpleplasty is a type of plastic surgery used to create dimples by damaging muscle.

The number of dimple surgeries has increased recently among men and women. Men prefer chin dimples whereas cheek dimples are popular among women. Back dimples -known as dimples of Venus- surgeries are also becoming popular.

How is dimpleplasty performed?

There are two types of dimple surgery:

Dimples which are always visible

Dimples which appear only while smiling

The surgeries are performed under local anaesthetic. The appropriate position for dimples is marked according to patient preference. A small opening inside the mouth along with mouth buccal mucosa will be made and a small amount of muscle and fat is removed to create a dimple; then the incision is sutured closed.

Patients are advised to consume soft food on the day of the surgery. Swelling and bruises can be observed for about a week after the surgery. It is expected to feel some pain for a couple of days. Once the swelling settles down, a dimple is expected to appear while smiling. A permanent dimple might be visible in some cases, but it will then become a natural dimple which only appears while smiling.
